gym newb for context. 31 yo. 5’9”. always been relatively fit. played soccer in college. but never been a big gym person. mostly used to run to be “healthy” after college until present day. got fed up of just looking average at the end of last year (well not average cuz i’m not obese lol).

6 months into upper/lower and i’ve gone from 153lbs to 162lbs. veins be popping up left and right, and just got my first “damn bro looking good” comment last week. it’s honestly insane cuz it’s only 6 months of work so far. it makes me look forward to seeing what the results at 1 year will be like.

if you are a newb like me but haven’t begun the journey…honestly just do exactly what ox says and it’s impossible to not see results. literally. not only will you see gains in gym but everything improves. work, life, health, happiness.

to ox, i will always be grateful for the knowledge you share daily bro. you have changed my life!

Maybe a dumb question but is it possible to miss out on newb gains if you work out like an idiot for your first couple of years? I've been doing it for about 2 years now but I feel like I was just messing about for most of that time and I'm only just finding my footing now. I've had strength gains but I feel like I don't look much different.

I’ve lifted on and off since highschool (36 now), but it’s always been in spurts. A solid few months followed by months of no lifting, or a few years of just calisthenics…never commitment for long periods of time. Can I still benefit from the frame work in this post or is another option more optimal?

I put on 22lbs.

Great post Ox! Appreciate all your content man!

Question, is the calorie deficit before or after the calories you burn from a workout? Or should you not even factor the calories you burn and juts subtract from your base metabolic rate? Thanks!
